AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100)

The rear panel is also home to a number of optional connections for accessories that aren't included in the box, including inputs for a rear camera and a wired remote control and a pair of stereo preamp outputs with switchable rear channel that double as a dedicated subwoofer output. There's also an HMDI input Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 connecting an Android phone, which is a slightly more complicated installation than just plugging in an iPhone.

A full list can be found on Pioneer's Web site. It may be possible to roll your own Android connection with a third-party MHL connection and charger, but we haven't yet been able to test that hypothesis. So, this feels like a bit of an Android tax. The Android weirdness doesn't stop there. It continues into the setup process.

This much I expected. However, upon launching this app, I was immediately prompted to download a second app, CarKeyboard, that enables the phone to receive inputs from the AppRadio's touch screen via Bluetooth.

This keyboard must be set as your input method when using AppRadio 2, so users who already have a favorite custom keyboard such as Swype or SwiftKey will have to switch back and forth when entering or exiting the vehicle. Getting into the AppRadio menu screen requires a cycling of the parking brake engage, release, Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 engage again to gain access to the HDMI input. Once you've done that the system seems to remember that it's displaying a car interface, not a video, while you're driving, but this brake pumping has to be done at the beginning of every trip.

I found that to Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 tremendously annoying. But apart from that there are menus installed to help swipe and scroll through music, photos and whatever else might be stored on the phone, displayed on the Pioneer screen or played through the car speakers. Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 unit itself has an input for a rear-view camera, its own GPS antenna to help with navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity with an external microphone provided for taking hands-free calls.

The unit will also charge whatever mobile device is connected. This can be handy when using the navigation or examining a photo. Performance Whizzing through the menus is fast and smooth, and Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 large colourful icons make it easy to navigate — so you don't need to take your eyes off the road for too long.

The navigation will be as effective as you want it to be, based on the number of apps you install, but the menu for selecting music is quite different to that of Apple's, making it a little confusing trying to access certain songs Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 playlists. However, due to both Android and iPhone connectivity it's possible the software designers were looking for common ground, this being the result.

Pioneer AppRadio 2 review T3

Bluetooth works as expected, muting the music when a call comes through. Verdict If you can live without a CD player, and want to make it purely about integrating your Pioneer SPH-DA100 AppRadio 2 and car, this is a bright, colourful and — with its touchscreen and scrolling — very slick way of achieving it.

While the software interface may feel a little cumbersome at times, it does what it sets out to do, bringing navigation and music from your phone into the car.
