Canon's Image Stabilizer gives you crisp, clear photos, even at full zoom. The IS uses motion sensors and tiny motors that move an element inside the lens. As you move one direction, the lens element moves in the opposite direction, canceling out your motion. IS is effective at all light levels but is most useful in low-light situations.

The net result is that IS lets you shoot at shutter speeds two to four times as long as would be possible with a conventional lens. In dim light, this can make the difference between a sharp picture and a blurry one.

The Pro90 IS is light and surprisingly compact. The big lens adds significant bulk, but in general the camera is easy to handle. Key controls are grouped around an easy-to-hold rubberized handgrip on the right side of the camera.

The zoom control is located on a metal ring at the front of the lens, rather than the more traditional push buttons on the back. We had mixed feelings about this, since the location of the zoom ring means that you need one hand on the camera and one on the zoom ring. Having both hands on the camera helps stabilize it, though.

A flip-out screen on the back of the camera can be used for playback or shooting. The LCD is small but bright, with an antireflective coating that makes the screen easier to see in harsh light. On the other side, another door provide access to USB, video-out, and power-in connectors. Any of the above operations during data transfer will disable the firmware update. Start the camera with Replay mode 1. Ensure the camera is powered from the AC power supply.

Insert the CF card in the camera. Select "Firm Update" from the menu 1.

Select "Firm Update" from the menu. If the "Firm Update" option is not available from the menu, then the "DC97" folder was not copied correctly to the CF card. If this is the case then return to Step 1. Press the "SET" button.

If you cannot see the menu shown in step 4, it means that firmware version 1. Please verify the following before downloading the archived firmware file.

Please see the inner side of the battery cover. If you can see a red stamp "2" there, firmware version 1.

If you wait more than 5 minutes between Procedures 4 and 5, the camera will cancel the menu and turn off using its Auto Power Off function when you press the MENU button. In this case the firmware is not updated. To update the firmware please return to Procedure 2.

The message shown here will be displayed on the LCD monitor until the update is complete. The update will take approximately 70 seconds. Do not turn the power off during the firmware writing operation.
