If I wait both eventually print when I remember to add paper.
I did a firmware upgrade on Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer CP and the error happens less. I am only guessing, bit I think it is a timing issue between spooling the job and a response back from CUPS.
The error is cosmetic but annoying in my case. AppArmor support may be re-enabled by running "sudo aa-enforce cupsd". Apparently this is a known cups bug addressed in Jaunty Jackalope 9. Occurs mainly with large photos.
Brother printers and Ubuntu Linux 8.04
It looked like it was online and I ran a program on the Terminal that sent output to it. It kept showing up as "Offline," Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer I couldn't find anything to tell me why. I finally looked around, found the Brother driver probably the same as the one I had been usingdownloaded and installed it, removed, power-cycled, then added the printer Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer it showed up again and I was able to use it.

Bug # “Slow printer processing for Brother HL” : Bugs : cups package : Ubuntu
I am unable to reproduce it now. The driver configuration dialog now pops up when I plug my printer in.
However, the end Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer is still that my printer is not available to libgnomeprint applications. The printer is not available in the application's print dialog. Another issue is that the hotplug event that is Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer with the printer must be triggered while I am logged in. In other words, if I log in with the printer already plugged in then I must unplug it and plug it back it to get the configuration dialog to pop up.

As for printers not showing up - this is probably because of the optimization I made recently to have cups broadcast on new printers instead of polling. That's only in cups 1: What version do you have?
Comment Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer John J5 Palmieri We need to handle the case where a user logs onto the desktop with the printer plugged in. Note that the dialog should only ever pop up once. I'm guessing we can do this with a scan of HAL when the session loads.
CC'ing davidz on this. David, how best should we handle this? Doesn't g-v-m handle this for drives?
Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer 20 David Zeuthen Comment 22 Colin Walters Can you give that a try? Comment 23 John J5 Palmieri The backtrace is worthless because it looks like the program's stack is corrupt. Message did not receive a reply Comment 25 W.
Printer drivers for Brother HL - X times the power, X times the fun!
I am once again provided with the driver selection interface when I plug my printer. However, my printer is still not available in applications' print dialog. Comment 26 John J5 Palmieri Basicly the values put into gconf are the ones reported by hal and not the ones in the database. The Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer reason for the gconf keys is to map the hal values to the database values. If we are mapping hal to hal then you can see why it quickly becomes useless.
Brother HL-1440 CUPS Printer note here when the fix is in rawhide.
Thanks for for helping to get this resolved. Comment 27 John J5 Palmieri I am prompted to choose a driver and the printer becomes available in applications that use gnomeprint.
